- Gun massacres fell 37 percent during the 1994-2004 assault rifle ban period and in the ten years after it lapsed, they went up by 183 percent.
- Americans are 51 times more likely to be killed by gunfire than people in the United Kingdom.
- In February 2017, Donald Trump signed a measure that scrapped an Obama-era regulation aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of some severely mentally ill people.
Democrat, Republican and everyone in between, we’ve all been touched by the shooting in Parkland. But it takes COURAGE to act. To speak up. So, this week’s Scare Your Soul Challenge is:
Turn Anguish Into Action
Regardless of of your political viewpoint, push your comfort zone this week to ACT:
1.Contact Your Elected Officials. Get educated, and then Contact the Capitol switchboard at (202)-224-3121. Once you’re on the line, ask to be connected with your local representative in the House or Senate, and then you’ll be transferred to their office to likely speak with their legislative assistant. Make sure your message is clear to them that you want to see real action taken on gun control to prevent tragedies like this one from happening again. Remember to only contact representatives from within your state in order to be the most effective in your pursuit of stronger gun control measures.
2.Donate blood. You can utilize the American Red Cross and donate anywhere across the country by going to their website to locate a donation center near you.
3.Donate to help the families of the victims. The Broward Education Foundation set up a GoFundMe page to “provide relief and financial support to the victims and families of the horrific shooting.”
[If you live outside the US, you too can find ways in your own country to ensure that you are speaking up against gun violence!]
Together, we can act, individually and as a Scare Your Soul community.
We invite YOU to join our FREE weekly courage challenges!
