“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.”
The well-known theologian Martin Buber once said, “all journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.”
And the equally amazing philosopher Dr. Seuss once said: “You’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So… get on your way!”
How many times have we ventured out of our box we call our comfort zone, only to experience things, meet amazing people, and see things in ourselves that we never anticipated?
It is would be wonderful to be able to be able to take a month off and travel India or Bali or Patagonia, but our travels can be smaller in scale and still achieve tremendous impact.
This week’s Scare Your Soul Challenge is:
Visit One Place This Week You’ve Never Been
Take an evening and get lost, take a different subway and get off and explore, visit a park or museum that you’ve never been to. Whether it’s a day or an hour, find some time and explore! Get out of your rut. Bring a friend if you’d like. But push yourself to visit someplace new!
Visit the private SYS Facebook community and tell us what you are going to do, and what happened.
When I was 22, freshly back from a year abroad, I started a new job in fundraising at a big, successful non-profit. At my first meetings I attended, I was overwhelmed with the hundreds of volunteers, donors, and community leaders buzzing around. It seemed that every other staff person knew them all, and I didn’t know a soul. I felt like I would never meet the high standards.
My mother, in her infinite wisdom, bought me a book, which I have now read about 30 times.
In Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, Susan Jeffers says something so SIMPLE but yet so freeing. She says that we will NEVER NOT FEEL FEAR. As we continue to grow, we will continue to feel the fear of the new experience. The key is to DO IT ANY WAY.
In this manifesto, she highlights five truths about fear, which are powerful to keep in mind:
FIVE TRUTHS ABOUT FEAR
- The fear will never go away as long as I continue to grow.
- The only way to get rid of the fear of doing something is to go out and do it.
- The only way to feel better about myself is to go out and do it.
- Not only am I going to experience fear whenever I am in unfamiliar territory, so is everyone else.
- Pushing through fear is less frightening than living with the underlying fear that comes with a feeling of helplessness.
YES! SO TRUE!
So, what are you going to do this week to push your comfort zones? Where new are you going to go?
