“I often quoted Hemingway: “I drink to make other people more interesting.” But it wasn’t true. I drank to pretend that my life was more interesting than it was.” – Gay Alcorn
What do you use to numb challenging emotions or situations??
I’ll be honest, the first 20 minutes after my first glass of wine is amazing.
I feel light, witty, conversational, happy. Tougher emotions melt away.
It’s hard to admit, but I feel like the ME I want to be.
But after that 20 minutes it all goes downhill. One drink leads to another. And I lose the valuable clarity – not to mention my memory – of my life.
The reality is that drugs numb – along with the challenging feelings – many of the good ones too. It reminds me of the quote from Brene Brown:
“We cannot selectively numb emotions, when we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the positive emotions.”
Starting tonight, let’s all spend this weekend SOBER.
Can you spend Friday – Sunday without alcohol and just LIVING DEEPLY?
Just experiencing LIFE?
